How to Choose Balayage Inspiration Photos
An inspiration photo is useful when it shows placement and tone in honest light, and misleading when it hides the starting colour or uses a heavy filter. Send two or three pictures you actually like, plus daylight photos of your own hair. Do not send a folder of opposite blondes. A stylist needs the distance between your hair and the goal, not a mood board of every trend.

A consultation reviews your starting colour, hair history, and condition before any service is booked.
The problem this page answers
You have saved dozens of blondes and none of them look like your hair. A stylist cannot average a folder.
The useful set is a small number of goal photos plus honest pictures of what you are starting with.
Signs a photo will mislead the consult
Drop or replace a picture if any of these are true.
- The model’s roots, length, or density are nothing like yours and you have not said so.
- The image is filtered, flashed, or shot at sunset.
- You cannot tell whether the brightness is painted or is a lighting trick.
- The next photo in the set is a different colour family.
Why the same photo fails two different heads
A goal image does not include your dye history, gray pattern, or density. Two people can love the same caramel and need different first visits.
Cameras also lie. A beige that exists only in an app is not a toner formula.
What to send
Two or three goal photos that agree with each other.
Daylight photos of your hair from the front, side, and back, down and dry.
A note on what you like in each goal photo: the face pieces, the overall depth, or the softness of the line.
A note on what you refuse: a harsh band, a pale end, or a warm root.
What not to do
Do not send a celebrity photo and say “exactly this” if their starting colour is unknown.
Do not edit your own hair in an app and treat the edit as a preview of chemistry.
Do not withhold a photo of your roots because you dislike them. Roots are the map.
When to wait on a colour date
Wait if you cannot describe what you like in the photos. A consult can still happen; a chemical day should not be a surprise.
Wait if every saved image is a different level and you have not chosen a family.
When to contact a stylist
Contact a stylist with the small set described above. Ask them to say what is realistic on your hair in one visit.
If they cannot see a shared goal in your pictures, tighten the set and write again.
How a stylist should use the photos
They should point to placement and tone, then say what your starting hair will allow. You should hear what will not transfer.
Photos start the conversation. They do not finish the formula.
Questions people ask
Should I send photos of the stylist’s own work?
If you like a specific result they have already produced, that can be clearer than a stranger’s photo. Still include pictures of your hair.
Is a screenshot from a reel useful?
Only if you can freeze a frame that shows the hair in ordinary light. Motion, music, and filters are not a formula.
Do I need before-and-after pairs?
A before of the model helps if it exists. A before of you is required if you want a realistic distance check.

Planning Your Balayage: Goals, Budget, Sessions and MaintenancePreparing for balayage is less about a lucky shampoo night and more about history, photos, and following the arrival notes you were sent. Bring the names of dyes you have used and pictures of the hair in daylight. Do not box the roots or bleach a “head start.” If you were not told whether to arrive with clean or second-day hair, ask. Guessing is how appointments start late.
How to Prepare for a Balayage AppointmentA balayage visit lasts as long as the map, processing, and toner require on your hair, not a number copied from another client. Density, length, previous dye, and whether this is a consult or a full service all change the clock. Ask for a time window when you book, and say if you have a hard leave time. Do not rush processing because a parking meter is running.
How Long Does a Balayage Appointment Take?Book the consultation that matches your coverage goal, then let a stylist confirm it against your hair history. Face-framing, partial, and full balayage are placement choices, not guarantees. Previous dye, fragile hair, or a large brightness jump usually means a colour-history review or strand test before a standard service is reserved.
Which Balayage Service Should I Book?A year of balayage usually costs more than the first paint because toner fades sooner than placement. The yearly total depends on how pale the result is, how fast you wash, and how often you refresh the map. This page will not invent a dollar amount. Ask a stylist how many gloss visits and placement visits they expect for your goal, then price those visits with them.
Annual Balayage Maintenance CostA balayage consultation is where history, condition, and a first-visit goal get stated in words. You should leave knowing whether the next date is a standard placement, a strand test, a correction, or a wait. Bring daylight photos and an honest dye list. Do not treat the consult as a formality before a colour decided online. If those words are never said, you do not have a plan.
